What the NavVis Scanner Is
The NavVis scanner is a mobile mapping system that captures high-density point cloud data while being moved through a space, rather than requiring static set-up positions. Using a combination of LiDAR sensors, cameras, and an inertial measurement unit, it continuously records spatial information as the operator walks through a building or site.
Unlike conventional laser scanning, which often requires multiple static scans and time-consuming set-up, the NavVis system allows large areas to be captured quickly and efficiently. This makes it particularly effective for complex interiors, live environments, and sites where access time is limited.
How the Technology Works
NavVis uses simultaneous localisation and mapping, often referred to as SLAM, to build a highly detailed 3D model in real time. As the scanner moves, it constantly references its position against previously captured data, allowing it to maintain spatial accuracy across large areas.
The system also captures high-resolution imagery alongside LiDAR data, which can be overlaid onto the point cloud. This provides visual context that supports clearer interpretation and reduces the risk of misidentifying features during processing and analysis.
How NavVis Improves Survey Accuracy
One of the key ways NavVis improves accuracy is through data consistency. Because information is captured continuously rather than in isolated scan positions, there is less risk of gaps, misalignment, or incomplete coverage. This is particularly beneficial in long corridors, multi-room environments, or spaces with complex geometry.
The density of the point cloud also allows for more precise measurement and modelling. Features such as walls, floors, ceilings, and structural elements can be defined clearly, reducing interpretation errors during drawing production. When combined with control points or traditional survey data, NavVis outputs can achieve accuracy suitable for detailed design and coordination work.
Practical Benefits on Live and Complex Sites
NavVis is especially valuable on operational sites where shutting down access is not practical. The speed of capture minimises disruption, while the ability to navigate tight or cluttered spaces allows surveyors to record areas that are difficult to capture using static equipment.
The system also supports repeatability. Areas can be rescanned efficiently if changes occur, ensuring survey data remains current without significant time or cost implications. This is particularly useful for refurbishment projects, asset management, and building lifecycle planning.
Using NavVis as Part of a Wider Survey Strategy
While NavVis offers clear advantages, it is most effective when used as part of a considered survey strategy rather than as a standalone solution. Control, verification, and experienced interpretation remain essential to ensure accuracy and reliability.
At Subvision Surveys, NavVis scanning is integrated with established survey methods to deliver robust, usable data. The technology is applied where it adds genuine value, supporting accurate modelling, clear reporting, and informed decision-making.
