Ground Penetrating Radar Kent

Kent’s geology shifts noticeably across the county, from chalk downland in the north to the sandstone and clay of the Weald further south, and that variation has a real, practical effect on GPR performance depending on where in the county a survey is being carried out.

From the North Downs to the Weald

The North Downs and much of east Kent sit on chalk, generally allowing good radar penetration and clear resolution. Moving south into the Weald, ground conditions shift toward heavier clay and sandstone, which can behave quite differently under GPR, sometimes limiting depth of penetration in the denser clay areas. Because a single county can span such different ground types, our surveyors treat each site on its own merits rather than assuming Kent-wide conditions are consistent.

Orchards, Vineyards and Agricultural Land

Kent’s long agricultural history, particularly its orchards, hop gardens and more recently vineyards, means a fair amount of our GPR work in the county relates to land with a farming heritage rather than dense urban infrastructure. These sites can still carry buried services, drainage systems, old field boundaries or agricultural infrastructure not always reflected in modern records, particularly where agricultural land is being considered for residential or commercial development.

Coastal Erosion and Ground Stability

Kent’s coastline, including the well-known chalk cliffs around Dover and the softer, more erosion-prone ground further along the coast, means ground stability is a genuine consideration for GPR survey work in coastal areas. Understanding local ground behaviour matters not just for utility detection, but for correctly interpreting results in areas where natural ground movement may already be a factor.

We work with a wide range of clients, from homeowners and builders to architects, developers, civil engineers, utility contractors and local authorities. Whether you’re carrying out groundwork on a residential property or managing a large commercial development, our team provides accurate utility mapping that’s tailored to your project and helps reduce the risks associated with excavation.

Our specialist surveyors use the latest detection equipment to locate and map a variety of buried services, including electricity cables, gas mains, water pipes, drainage systems, telecommunications and fibre optic networks. By combining multiple survey methods with our industry experience, we’re able to provide a detailed picture of what’s beneath the surface, giving you greater confidence before any excavation work begins.

Every project starts with understanding your site and the level of information you need. Our team uses a combination of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and electromagnetic locating technology to detect underground utilities as accurately as possible. We then process the survey data into clear, easy-to-read drawings that can be used by contractors, architects and engineers throughout your project.

Our underground utility surveys are carried out for projects of all sizes, from domestic extensions and new-build homes through to commercial developments, highways, schools and major infrastructure works. Our team has contributed to nationally recognised projects, including The Shard, Wembley Stadium and The O2 Arena, while continuing to provide the same high level of service to local clients across Essex.

We’ve seen first-hand how costly and disruptive damaged underground services can be.
