Ferro Scanning
What is ferro scanning? Also known as a ferroscan or rebar survey, ferro scanning uses a handheld cover meter alongside ground penetrating radar (GPR) to detect and precisely locate reinforcement (rebar) within concrete structures. It’s a non-invasive method used to establish rebar position, orientation and cover depth before any drilling, cutting or coring work begins.
What Ferro Scanning Involves
Ferro scanning and handheld GPR scanning allow for precise, non-invasive mapping surveys. The data gathered gives a clear, accurate view of rebar locations and depths within reinforced concrete slabs, which is then reported and marked directly on site. These methods are ideal for the construction industry ahead of breaking ground, giving contractors confidence in exactly what they’re working around before any physical intervention begins.
When paired together, the ferro scanner and handheld GPR can provide additional information, including the thickness of stud walls, post-tension cable locations and RSJ locations. Our experts also specialise in wider GPR surveys and utility mapping where a project needs this alongside ferro scanning.
Ferro Scanning – Why Subvision?
Subvision Surveys provides ferro scanning (rebar and cover meter surveys) to accurately locate reinforcement, embedded metal and cover depth within concrete structures before drilling, cutting or coring work begins.
Trusted by Tier 1 contractors: Our ferro scanning is regularly instructed by Tier 1 contractors and developers working to tight programme deadlines, where accurate reinforcement data is essential before any breaking-in works proceed.
Fully accredited: As an SSIP and ISO accredited company, we operate to recognised industry standards for quality and safety on every site we work on, from major construction sites to smaller private projects.
Combined with GPR where needed: On denser or older structures, our ferro scanning can be backed up with GPR Concrete Slab Surveys to identify post-tensioned cables, voids and other features that a cover meter alone can’t detect.
Clear, usable reporting: Results are marked up on-site and delivered in a format your contractors can act on immediately, showing rebar position, orientation and cover depth.
Nationwide coverage: With a strong presence across London and the South East, we deliver ferro scanning surveys nationwide for contractors, developers, planners and private individuals.
