GPR Surveys Surrey

Surrey’s ground shifts noticeably across the county, from the sandy heathland of the west to the heavier clay found closer to London’s edge, and that variation has a real, practical effect on how our surveyors approach a GPR survey depending on where in Surrey a site is located.

Bagshot Sands and London Clay

The western half of Surrey, around Camberley, Bagshot and Woking, sits largely on sandy Bagshot deposits, ground that generally allows good radar penetration and clear resolution. Moving east toward Surrey’s border with London, the ground shifts toward heavier London Clay, which conducts electrical signals more readily and can limit how deep a GPR survey can effectively see. Because a single county can span such different ground types, our surveyors adjust equipment settings and expectations to suit the specific site rather than assuming Surrey-wide conditions are consistent.

Surrey Hills and Greensand Ridge

Much of Surrey’s southern and central area sits within the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty shaped by the Greensand Ridge and North Downs chalk escarpment. Ground conditions here can vary sharply over short distances as the underlying geology changes between sandstone, greensand and chalk, meaning a survey approach that works well on one side of a ridge may need recalibrating just a short distance away.

Commuter Towns and Established Streets

Surrey’s towns, including Guildford, Woking and Reigate, have developed steadily as part of London’s commuter belt for well over a century, meaning underground infrastructure has often been added, repaired and extended across multiple decades. This is particularly relevant for the residential extension and renovation work common across the county, where established streets frequently carry utility layouts that predate current mapping standards.
